James is the Head of Engineering at SET, bringing over 20 years of engineering and leadership experience across robotics, telecommunications, research and development, manufacturing and the UK rail industry.
Beginning his career in mechanical engineering, James went on to spend nine years as Director of Robotics & Mechanical Engineering at United Technologists Europe Ltd (UTEL), leading multidisciplinary teams responsible for developing innovative broadband infrastructure technologies. Since joining SET, he has progressed through a number of leadership roles, from Mechanical Engineer to Project Manager, Head of Projects and now Head of Engineering, giving him a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of engineering leadership.
James specialises in engineering leadership, organisational development, project and programme delivery, product design, industrialisation, rail systems engineering and engineering governance. He has led the delivery of complex engineering programmes for major rail organisations including Siemens, Hitachi, Porterbrook and Network Rail, whilst introducing structured engineering processes. James has played an integral role in transforming SET's Engineering function by strengthening accountability, improving collaboration and fostering a culture centred on learning, ownership and innovation. He believes engineering should be a strategic driver of business success, combining technical excellence with commercial thinking to deliver meaningful improvements for customers and the wider organisation.
